Water and Flood Awareness Course (Theory Element) - Currently Unavailable due to Covid-19 Regulations

The Water and Flood Awareness (Theory) course is a dry side or room-based course designed to provide employees, volunteers and rescue personnel with sufficient knowledge to be aware of the hazards created when working in the warm zone near water and help them develop a basic understanding of water rescue techniques.

Course length: 

1 day

Course content includes:

  • Standards in Water Rescue
  • The 'absolutes' of Water and Flood Rescue
  • Rescuer safety
  • Water and flood dynamics and hazards
  • Basic swiftwater swimming and self rescue
  • Flood theory
  • Personal and team equipment
  • On-scene safety briefing and site control
  • Pre-planning and incident management
  • Drowning, medical and personal welfare considerations
  • Mud, ice and unstable surface considerations
  • Communications

Defra level:

When combined with the practical Water Awareness day the candidate will have completed the requirements for:

Module 1 - Water Awareness - General water safety awareness training and basic land-based rescue techniques

3 years

Water and Flood Awareness (Practical Element)

For personnel who will operate in the warm zone at a water rescue incident and personnel who will operate near water as part of their key job function, e.g. construction workers, EA water hydrometry staff etc. As such, it is not intended that they will enter the water, and a manual or auto inflation lifejacket is worn as PPE for accidental water entry only.

6 hours (1 day)

  • Risk zones
  • Cold water immersion
  • Personal protective equipment
  • PFD types and standards
  • Firing mechanisms
  • Selection and correct fitting of lifejacket as part of PPE system
  • Adaption for high risk areas
  • Periodic maintenance/inspection regime
  • Pre-use and post-use checks
  • Accidental immersion and auto inflation
  • Still water swimming drills
  • Moving water swimming drills
  • Manual inflation and deflation
  • Rescue drills with lifejacket

Prerequisites:

Must be a confident swimmer

Minimum age: 18

Qualification valid for:

3 years
